Northeast evergreens turn brown, alarming some

DURHAM, N.H. — Pine trees in the Northeast aren’t looking so evergreen.

The U.S. Forest Service says a warm spring turned the needles of some pine trees brown, and it’s worrying some residents.

New Hampshire Forest Health Program Coordinator Kyle Lombard says he’s gotten more calls on the discoloration of white pine trees than any other forest-damaging event in recent years, including a big 1998 ice storm.

The Forest Service says minor damage to white pine trees has been reported in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The trees are expected to recover in the next few weeks.
