3 stowaways found on cargo ship in SC, 1 dead
CHARLESTON, S.C. — One man has been found dead and two others have been arrested after authorities say they stowed away on a cargo ship that docked in South Carolina.
The men were found after the M/V MSC Debra arrived at the Port of Charleston on Saturday from the Dominican Republic.
Authorities say the men hid in a container and had cut a hole in the top to get air. Dockworkers unloading the ship reported seeing men climbing out of the container.
A joint team from Border Protection and the Coast Guard responded, capturing one man on the ship and the other in the water.
The third man was found in the container.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office had not determined the cause of death or released the man’s name.
