CHANDIGARH - The Chandigarh administration Wednesday banned the carrying of firearms, batons and other weapons, an official said.

“We have issued strict directions that prohibit everyone from carrying firearms, sticks and any other kind of weapon in Chandigarh. These instructions have come into force from today,” Chandigarh District Magistrate Brijendra Singh said.

“The decision has been taken as carrying of small weapons openly tucked in the waist-band for showing off or intimidation and carrying of other weapons openly even by licence holders could create panic in the public. Breach of the order would be punishable under the provisions of Indian Penal Code.”

However, this order will not apply to police, military and paramilitary personnel and other government officials who carry weapons in connection with their official duties.
