UN urges international component in raid probe
UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. chief is urging Israel to agree to international participation in an investigation into its deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.
The Security Council has called for an investigation into Israel’s May 31 raid that killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American.
The U.N. says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wants to underscore that “credible international involvement is crucial to a prompt, credible, impartial and transparent investigation.”
U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said Tuesday that the secretary-general understands Israel is still considering whether to bring an international element into an investigation.
Israel’s Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday that Israel is considering options for an investigation and expects a decision soon.
