SURAT - Stormy winds and heavy rainfall hit some parts of the Gujarat’s Surat district on Wednesday evening.

Administrative officials, however, sought to clarify that the rains were not monsoon showers but could be indication of the Phet cyclone.

The State Government has issued an alert to Surat city warning the people about the danger.

According to District Collector of Surat, the cyclone is about 1,000 kilometres from the seashore of Gujarat.

“The depression has converted into a cyclone. And Surat is likely to face moderate to heavy rainfall,” said, Ashok Shah, Collector, Surat.

He also said: “The government officials have warned people against unwarranted journey…not to stand under trees and they should be in safe places.”

Though the weather department was not able to predict the precise direction of the cyclone, it is moving up the Arabian Sea towards Gujarat.

The weather department has sent warnings to the people and the fishermen to stay away from the coast. The speed of the cyclone is estimated at 75 kilometres per hour. (ANI)
