GM May sales up 17 percent on demand for new models and fleet sales

May Auto Sales: General Motors

DETROIT — General Motors said that strong demand for some of its new models and a big government fleet contract drove May sales up 17 percent.

GM said the biggest growth was among the four core brands that it is focusing on — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Those brands combined rose 32 percent for the month.

BY THE NUMBERS: GM sold 223,822 vehicles in May 2010.

TOP SELLER: Chevrolet Silverado. GM sold 33,690 of the pickup trucks during the month.

HOT MODEL: Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox midsize SUV were up 228 percent to 13,134.
