Now, Pak Army hit by massive ‘Daal Chana’ scam

Islamabad, May 28 (ANI): In what could be a one of its own kind scam, massive irregularities amounting to over 148.5 million rupees in purchasing ‘Daal Chana’ for the Pakistan Army has come to surface, with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) directing the Director General Procurement, Defence Production to submit a detailed report over the misappropriation of funds.

During a high level meeting of the PAC, which was presided over by the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, audit officials revealed that the tender for purchasing ‘Daal Chana’ was awarded to a firm named Rehman Daal Mills, whose owner was behind bars in connection with a fraud case at the time when the tender was submitted in his name.

The said firm was to supply wheatgram at the rate of 46,000 rupees per metric ton, however, the owner of the concerned supplier firm later vanished and the price of the commodity also increased in the market.

The matter was resolved only after intervention of the Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, and finally the Army procurement department paying 69,500 rupees per ton for ‘Daal Chana’.

“These institutions will have to provide details of the spending of each penny of the people’s money,” The News quoted Khan, as saying following the meeting. (ANI)
