Berenson husband: No word on deportation
LIMA, Peru — The husband of Lori Berenson says the couple has no official word on whether Peru might deport the freed New Yorker to the U.S.
Berenson was released on parole Thursday after 15 years in prison on a conviction of aiding leftist rebels. She and her 1-year-old son Salvador are with her parents in a Lima apartment.
The chief of Peru’s Cabinet has said it will meet to discuss whether to commute Berenson’s sentence and expel her. But the timing of the meeting is unclear.
Husband Anibal Apari says the child could only leave if he grants permission. He says he’ll evaluate the situation when the time comes.
Some in the upscale Miraflores neighborhood where Berenson is staying are unhappy she is there. They consider her a terrorist.
