West Midnapore (West Bengal), May 26 (ANI): A herd of 50 elephants went on a rampage, destroying standing crops and killing a farmer at Nayagram village in West Bengal’s West Midnapore District on Tuesday.

The elephants came from the nearby Orissa border and killed a farmer when he was working in his field.

Local people said that they tried to herd the elephants back where they came from.

“At morning we heard that an elephant had killed someone and they came from the nearby forest area. Then we villagers came here and saw the man was drawing in his last breaths, and after some time he died,” said Ramcharan Mahato, a local.

Panicked villagers asked police and forest officials for help, who came and moved the herd out of the area.

Officials and villagers are now keeping guard in the area. (ANI)
