Darjeeling (West Bengal), May 24 (ANI): The funeral procession of slain All India Gorkha League President and active Gorkhaland proponent Madan Tamang was taken out in West Bengal’s Darjeeling city on Monday.

The procession that began from his house Rhododendron Dell at Batasia was carried to his ancestral village at Medhma near Sandakpoo.

Thousands of people joined the procession to pay homage to the slain leader.

Darjeeling observed an undeclared strike like situation today also with shops and other institutions remaining closed. The police have arrested over 18 people so far in connection with the killing of Tamang.

Tamang was killed allegedly by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in Darjeeling on Friday.

According to sources, Tamang, who led the anti-GJM front in the Darjeeling Hills, was hit with a kukri (long knife used by Nepalis).

Tamang, a vocal opponent of the GJM, recently opposed the GJM’s stand on an interim set-up for Darjeeling Hills and demanded Gorkhaland instead. (ANI)
