Indian plane overshoots runway, casualties feared

NEW DELHI — An Air India plane with more than 160 passengers on board overshot a runway while landing in a southern city Saturday and there could be casualties, an airport official said.

Television images showed smoke rising from the aircraft as rescuers evacuated people from inside.

The Press Trust of India said the aircraft was landing in the southern Indian city of Mangalore, arriving from Dubai.

Peter Abraham, director of the Mangalore airport, told reporters that the plane did not catch fire but there were fumes around it.
