French director shows Polanski T-shirt at Cannes

CANNES, France — French director Xavier Beauvois has expressed support for detained filmmaker Roman Polanski by holding up a T-shirt emblazoned with Polanski’s name during a photo call at the Cannes Film Festival.

Beauvois is presenting his film “Of Gods and Men” at the French Riviera festival. He has called Polanski’s situation “Kafkaesque.”

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He was taken into custody in September and is currently under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.

New allegations surfaced last week when a British actress claimed Polanski sexually abused her when she was 16.

Beauvois told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that the new accusations were “ridiculous.”
