As the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) started to raze illegal structures, occupants protested and tried to stop bulldozers.olicemen chased away the illegal occupants and baton-charged the rapidly collecting mob to bring the situation under control.

The VDA launched the anti-encroachment drive in the city two months ago.
