FirstEnergy and Allegheny seek merger approval in Pa.; deal still expected to close next year

FirstEnergy and Allegheny seek merger OK in Pa.

AKRON, Ohio — FirstEnergy Corp. and Allegheny Energy Inc. said Friday they have filed an application with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission for approval of their proposed merger.

The companies have already filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and said they will also seek regulatory approval in West Virginia and Maryland this month and in Virginia later in the year.

They expect to close the merger in the first half of 2011.
