CHANDIGARH, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Surprising as it may sound to many, Chandigarh has beaten all big metros of India to emerge as the cleanest city in the country according to National Rating Exercise. It is the city in India with best sanitation practices. S Jaipal Reddy, the Union Urban Development Minister announced this on Monday and Mysore is at the second spot. The minister said in his statement that the purpose of this survey is to gauge how the leading cities of the country fare in health standards and also to find out ways to improve their standards.

The surveyors covered 423 cities in the country and they also divided the country into 5 areas. Every city was given point according to their performance on 19 aspects. The cities were color coded to indicate how they fare in the sanitation survey. However, no one of the cities could achieve the green code which indicates the best. The top 4 cities got placed in the blue category. Chandigarh got the highest marks and hence it was given the position of the cleanest city in India.

The Minister also said that while Chandigarh emerging as the nation’s cleanest city is a record, there are many other cities that are lagging behind. He has planned to write to the CMs of the states so that they can take steps to improve the level of sanitation. It is a matter of concern that the metros still lag behind the smaller cities in terms of health standards and sanitation he commented. The metros will require robust mass awareness and public service projects to improve their level of sanitation.
