UK’s Brown: I’ll take blame for election defeat

LONDON — British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says he’ll take the blame if his party fails in the country’s national election — a hint that he might step down as party leader if he loses power.

Brown told GMTV television Tuesday that he would “take full responsibility” if his party is humbled in Thursday’s vote after 13 years in office.

The party trails third in many polls behind the main opposition Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

Senior Labour figures are attempting to woo the Liberal Democrats. With no party likely to gain an outright majority, Labour may seek an alliance with its rival in an attempt to cling to power.
