BIJAPUR - Maoist rebels killed a member of the ‘Salwa Judum’, a local militia formed to fight Maoists, in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur District on Sunday.

Rajkumar Nayak was killed while on his way home.

“He was the chief of Salwa Judum who had been appealing to the Superintendent of Police to give him more security. The Maoists are killing our leaders one by one. We have demanded security for our leaders but the concerned authorities have neglected our appeals,” claimed Ajay Singh, a General Secretary of the Congress District Committee.

“Maoists were watching him closely for many days. They were monitoring him constantly. They capitalized on this opportunity and killed him,” said R K Bhoria, the Police Station in-Charge, Mirtur.

The Maoists claim they are crusading for the poor, marginal farmers, and landless labourers.

They have spread into the rural pockets of 20 of India’s 28 states. (ANI)
