3 students accused of breaking into RI mansion
NEWPORT, R.I. — Three college students are accused of breaking into a famous Newport, R.I., mansion, though nothing was stolen.
Officials say the Salve (SAL’-vay) Regina University students entered The Breakers on Sunday morning. The Gilded Age mansion was built in 1895 as a summer home for the Vanderbilt family.
Andrea Carneiro, a spokeswoman for the Preservation Society of Newport County — which owns The Breakers and other Newport mansions — said the security system worked well. She said police were already investigating by the time the students had returned to campus, which is adjacent to the mansion.
The students face breaking-and-entering charges.
