NEW YORK — The lyrics were so controversial that the BBC once banned its airing.

Now, the words are so coveted they could bring upward of half a million dollars.

John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to the Beatles classic “A Day in the Life” are being auctioned in June by Sotheby’s. The double-sided sheet of paper that features Lennon’s edits and corrections in his own hand is expected to fetch between $500,000 and $700,000.

The lyrics to the final song on the classic “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” stirred controversy when the Beatles released the album in 1967. The BBC banned its airing because it featured the line, “I’d love to turn you on,” which was interpreted as supporting illegal drug use. The song was also left off albums sold in some Asian countries.
