Media group: 17 journalists killed in April
LONDON — An international media safety group says 17 media workers died violently this month, making it the bloodiest April for journalists recorded in the past five years.
The International News Safety Institute says the victims included those reporting unrest in Thailand and Nigeria.
The London-based group says 42 media professionals in 22 countries have died so far this year. Most were murdered, and at least 27 of those deaths were confirmed to be connected with the victims’ work.
It said Wednesday Honduras has been deadliest for journalists this year, with Mexico, Pakistan, Colombia and Nigeria the next most dangerous nations.
The group called on those nations to bring perpetrators to justice before World Press Freedom Day next week.
