US officials put Guatemalans on drug kingpin list
GUATEMALA CITY — The U.S. Treasury Department has put a Guatemalan rancher and his three sons on a list of drug kingpins.
The agency’s statement on Tuesday says that Waldemar Lorenzana Lima works with Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel to help move cocaine from Colombia through Guatemala and toward the United States. His sons Eliu, Haroldo and Waldemar also have been put on the list.
The designation bars Americans or U.S. companies from any dealings with the Lorenzanas.
Lorenzana is also sought by Guatemalan authorities. In the past, he and his sons have denied involvement in the drug trade, describing themselves as ranchers and businessmen.
