Unpublished Twain family sketch set for NY auction

NEW YORK — A never published personal account by Mark Twain on his family is scheduled to be sold at a New York City auction house.

The famous humorist and storyteller wrote “A Family Sketch” shortly after his eldest daughter, Olivia “Susy” Clemens, died in 1896. It is among a trove of 200 personal letters, manuscripts and photographs going on sale June 17 at Sotheby’s New York.

The auction house will exhibit the material for five days, beginning Wednesday, on the 100th anniversary of the author’s death at age 74.

The intimate family record is estimated to sell for $120,000 to $180,000.

The entire collection could fetch $750,000 to $1.2 million. It belonged to the late media executive James S. Copley.
