US Mint dedicates first parks quarter in Arkansas

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Hot Springs National Park is depicted on the first quarter in the U.S. Mint’s new series honoring national parks and historic sites.

U.S. Mint director Edmund Moy and more than 1,000 others gathered Tuesday at Hot Springs National Park Headquarters to dedicate the new coin. Moy says the coins are a way for a new generation of Americans to learn about their heritage.

Hot Springs National Park was the first land set aside by the federal government when it was established as a reservation in 1832. It became a national park in 1921.

The next coin in the series will show Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, which became the first national park in 1872.

Five coins in the 56-quarter series will be released this year.
