ISLAMABAD - Blowing the whistle over the prevailing massive corruption in the process of acquiring weapons and other articles in the armed forces, the Transparency International Pakistan (TIP) has asked Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to take immediate steps to bring transparency in the military’s procurements of arms.

The TIP, in a letter to General Kayani, said that the Pakistan Army’s reputation is at stake due to the action of some its officials, who for their own gains are influencing arms procurement.

“Pakistan Armed Forces reputation is at stake due to the action of a few army officers and other Army procuring agencies in violation of procurement rules. Corruption by armed forces officers endangers the very existence of the country which may result in the procurement of sub-standard arms due to conflict of interest, and for personal gains over the national cause by a few individuals,” The News quoted the letter, as stating.

The international corruption watchdog described corruption as deadly as cancer and said that it may result in the procurement of sub standard arms due to conflict of interest, and for personal gains over the national cause by a few individuals.

The letter mentioned that corruption has also engulfed the India Army, but noted that action were being initiated in most of such cases.

“Indian Armed Forces are also not free from this cancer, but there actions are taken against such elements,” it said. (ANI)
