2nd try to euthanize whale stranded at NY beach
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — A team has tried for a second time to euthanize a young humpback whale stranded in the surf along an exclusive beach used mostly by residents of a tony New York City suburb.
As waves broke around the dying whale at the East Hampton beach late Thursday night, team members kept solemn vigil after administering drugs to the animal in an attempt to euthanize it.
The Riverhead Foundation’s Charles Bowman says they began using darts to administer lethal drugs to the whale after 9 p.m. It’s unclear how long it will take for the animal to die.
He says the whale’s breathing had begun to slow.
The 20-to 25-foot-long whale since it was found Tuesday. Marine scientists say the animal can’t survive on its own.
