Iran unveils more efficient centrifuge machines

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has unveiled a third generation of domestically built centrifuges capable of enriching uranium much faster than machines now being used in Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iran has periodically announced advancements in its efforts to build its own centrifuges, the machines at the core of its disputed nuclear program. International sanctions and efforts by the U.S. and its allies to negotiate with Iran have failed to persuade it to stop enriching uranium.

The technology is of concern because it can be used to generate power or material for nuclear bombs.

In a ceremony Friday marking the National Day of Nuclear Technology, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled one of the new machines.
