Myanmar’s Suu Kyi pleased party didn’t register
YANGON, Myanmar — Detained Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she is pleased with her party’s decision not to contest upcoming general elections.
Nyan Win, a spokesman for her National League for Democracy, quoted her saying Wednesday she is “extremely delighted” at the decision not to register to run in the polls, which are being held under laws she has described as unjust and undemocratic.
Nyan Win met Suu Kyi at her home where she is under house arrest.
The party decided March 29 not to contest the first elections in military-ruled Myanmar in two decades. The date for the polls has not been announced.
The move undermines the elections’ credibility in the eyes of the international community, which has urged the junta to ensure all groups can take part.
