THE HAGUE - The Dutch naval frigate Tromp Lynx intervened to free a hijacked German merchant ship and arrested 10 pirates off the coast of Somalia, the Netherlands’ defense ministry said Monday.

In a statement, the ministry said that the Dutch navy received an emergency call from the German container ship MS Taipan Monday morning, which was attacked by pirates in an area around 500 nautical miles east of the Somali coast, Xinhua reported.

The Dutch marines tried to negotiate a peaceful release but failed. After that, a crew of the Dutch marines fired and boarded the ship. Ten pirates were arrested and none of the 15 crew members including two Germans was harmed.
