Cape Winds taps Siemens for turbines

BOSTON — The developers of a proposed wind farm in Nantucket Sound say they’ve reached an agreement with Siemens to supply the 130 turbines needed for the project.

Cape Wind did not disclose Wednesday the turbines’ price.

Cape Wind president Jim Gordon called the agreement a step toward jumpstarting the U.S. offshore wind industry.

The Cape Wind project, which would be the nation’s first offshore wind farm, has been under review since 2001. A final decision on its federal approval is expected from the Secretary of the Interior in April.

Cape Wind says the project would provide green jobs and about 75 percent of Cape Cod’s electricity. Opponents say it’s a hazard to marine and bird life, would mar historic vistas, and should be relocated out of Nantucket Sound.
