MoneyGram adds Turkey’s Bank Asya to agent network

MINNEAPOLIS — Money transfer company MoneyGram International on Tuesday said it added Bank Asya, a Turkish financial institution, to its agent network.

Bank Asya will provide money transfer services at 160 branch locations in Turkey, both to its three million account holders and customers without accounts.

About $1.3 billion was sent to Turkey in remittances from other countries in 2008, according to the World Bank. European countries like Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria, as well as the United States, are among the top countries for remittances.

The additions bring MoneyGram’s network to 190,000 agent locations in 190 countries and territories.

MoneyGram shares closed Tuesday trading up 4 cents at $3.56. The stock has changed hands between $1.08 and $3.60 in the past 52 weeks.
