WSJ’s New York section to hit streets April 26

NEW YORK — The Wall Street Journal’s expanded coverage of New York will begin April 26 as the newspaper attempts to appeal to more readers in the most populous U.S. city.

The new section represents a direct challenge to The New York Times as the Journal tries to diversify beyond its national business audience and bring in more advertising revenue.

Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of Journal owner News Corp., announced the plans for the New York section earlier this month. It marked Murdoch’s latest salvo aimed at the Times since News Corp. bought the Journal in 2007.

Other media outlets had reported the New York section would launch April 12, but a Journal spokeswoman said Thursday the newspaper hadn’t picked a debut date until settling on April 26.
