KOLKATA - The West Bengal Government has ordered a high level probe into the fire that swept through the three floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building on Park Street on Tuesday afternoon.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee visited the fire-ravaged buildings today morning to take note of the prevailing situation.

Meanwhile, the Opposition raised the issue in the state assembly and strongly criticized the government over its failure to control the fire and rescue the trapped persons.

The leaders of the Trinamool Congress, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SCUI) and the Congress staged a walk out from the House demanding resignation of West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee.

Chatterjee had blamed the excessive traffic for the delay in rescue efforts.

There are reports that the forensic experts have begun their probe and over 21 dead bodies have been recognized so far.

The death toll is now reported to be over 24, with several people still missing. (ANI)
