Mozambique, donors say aid-money dispute resolved

MAPUTO, Mozambique — Mozambican and donor officials say they have resolved questions over corruption and democracy that led to an aid freeze.

Planning and Development Minister Aiuba Cuereneia said Wednesday the agreement means aid will resume. The government has been awaiting the start of the disbursal of $175 million since January.

Finnish Ambassador Kari Alanko, chairman of a group of 19 donors, on Wednesday expressed satisfaction “with the plans of the new government to develop good governance.”

An opposition presidential candidate in last year’s election said the elections commission unfairly squashed his new party’s chances.

The watchdog Transparency International ranks the southern African nation among the world’s 50 most corrupt countries.
