New York officer shot responding to call in Bronx

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer is in serious condition after being shot by a man barricaded in his mother’s bedroom in the Bronx.

Officer Robert Salerno in a hospital after the shooting Monday. He was conscious when he was taken to a hospital.

A home health care aide had called 911 to say her client’s son had a gun. Officers arrived and traded fire with the man.

The suspected gunman, Santiago Urena, was found dead inside the apartment.
