Ex-Scotland Yard detective jailed for cocaine plot
LONDON — A former detective with Scotland Yard’s drug squad has been jailed for his role in a plot to smuggle hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cocaine into Ireland.
Michael Daly was sentenced to 22 years in prison Thursday for organizing an attempt to sneak more than 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of cocaine into southern Ireland, where his family lived.
Daly’s plan was foiled when his boat ran out of fuel in rough seas and was shipwrecked off the Irish coast on July 2, 2007.
Daly, 49, and his co-conspirator Alan Wells, a 57-year-old former firefighter, have both admitted conspiring to supply to the drug.
Wells was sentenced to 15 years. Daly is already serving eight years behind bars for a similar conspiracy.
