Northrop Grumman issues layoff notices to 180

HERNDON, Va. — Northrop Grumman Corp. said on Thursday that it issued layoff notices to 180 employees at its Hagerstown, Md., maintenance and modification center.

Northrop said the notices went out because it expects a lull in work at the center. The company said it expects to finish current projects with the Navy and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in mid-June. It said it may have new work at the facility in the early fall.

“We find ourselves closing out existing task orders while waiting on new business opportunities,” said David Tracy, the Hagerstown site director. “We are taking prudent business measures today to ensure viability of the operation for the future.”

He said the company is looking into using the employees at other Northrop sites.

Northrop shares added 12 cents to $64.67 in afternoon trading.
