Groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for Nets arena

NEW YORK — A groundbreaking ceremony is set for the long-delayed Brooklyn development that includes a new arena for the New Jersey Nets.

The $1 billion arena was announced in 2003 and was originally supposed to be open for the current NBA season. But the $4.9 billion, 22-acre Atlantic Yards project has been delayed by lawsuits filed by residents who fought the use of eminent domain.

The arena is now scheduled to be open sometime in 2012. Work will start on the first of several apartment buildings in 2011.

The groundbreaking Thursday afternoon will be attended by local and state officials including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson.

Opponents plan to stage a protest.
