SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- The list of the wealthiest men of the world has just been declared, and the one to top the list this year is the telecom tycoon from Mexico, Carlo Slim Helu. The list does indeed show some very significant changes from the previous years. For one thing, this is the first time in the last 16 years that someone of non-American origin has managed to grab the top position in the list. On the other hand, this is also the first time in the last 14 years that Bill Gates has been ousted from his position of the richest man in the world.
Carlos Slim Helu, it has been estimated by the magazine which has made the compilation, is worth an estimated $53.5 billion, in US dollars. He had raised the amount by 18.5 billion in the last one year itself, most of which can be attributed to the fact that the shares of the company he invests in, American Movil, had risen by a whopping 35%. Carlos Slim Helu has an investment worth $23 billion in American Movil.
Carlos Slim Helu has ousted two Americans to be in the top spot, the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, whom he has left behind by $500 billion, and Warren Buffett, who is in the third position. This diversion from the trend does bring into the spotlight the possibility that the United States might no longer retain the position of being the money market of the world. Moreover, the top position being hogged by Carlos Slim Helu also marks a great improvement in the general economic condition of Mexico.
