NEW YORK — Laborers hoping to help rebuild the World Trade Center site are rallying near the site to urge that the project move forward more quickly.
The rallied Tuesday ahead of a Friday deadline for arriving at a rebuilding schedule. Hundreds of workers have gathered in their work gear and holding signs urging that their jobs be saved.
Construction is under way on 1 World Trade Center, a memorial and a transit hub. But the building of other towers has stalled.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey controls the property. The agency says it does not believe public financing for the entire project is the answer.
Developer Larry Silverstein says he cannot get private financing for all three towers he’s allowed to build there.
