Barnes & Noble names head of digital content

NEW YORK — Book retailer Barnes & Noble Inc. said Monday it named Jonathan Shar general manager, digital newsstand and emerging content of its Web site.

Shar, 41, was previously senior vice president and general manager of Time Warner’s CNNMoney.com. Before that, he was vice president of consumer marketing for the Sports Illustrated Group.

Shar will be responsible for creating and heading Barnes & Noble’s digital newsstand and emerging content business, working to digitally sell a variety of newspapers and magazines and other content at Barnes & Noble’s Web site, bn.com.

Barnes & Noble launched its Nook e-book reader late last year in an effort to counter tough competition from discounters and online book sellers.
