WSJ’s New York section to launch in April
NEW YORK — News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch said Tuesday that The Wall Street Journal will launch its New York metro section in April.
Rumored for weeks, it is the latest salvo in an escalating battle with The New York Times. Murdoch has been positioning the Journal to compete more directly with the Times since he took over the Journal in 2007, adding sections dedicated to national and international coverage to go along with the newspaper’s traditional focus on business and finance.
In remarks to the Real Estate Board of New York, Murdoch left few doubts that the new section is another jab at the Journal’s rival.
“We believe that in its pursuit of journalism prizes and a national reputation, a certain other New York daily has essentially stopped covering the city the way it once did,” he said.
Messages left with the Times were not immediately returned.
Murdoch said the Journal is hiring editors and reporters for the new metro section. He said it will be in full color — something advertisers pay a premium for — and will include stories on state and local politics, business, culture, sports and real estate.
