Yemen raid kills southern activist, family
SAN’A, Yemen — Local officials in south Yemen say a government raid killed a southern activist, his wife and three children during an ongoing crackdown on southern separatists.
The officials say Ali Saleh al-Hadi was killed with his family in a pre-dawn raid Monday on their home in Zinjabar town in southern Abyan province.
They say two soldiers also died in the raid but provided no further details. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to talk to the media.
Police on Sunday arrested 21 people on suspicion of belonging to the South’s secessionist movement.
South Yemen was once a separate country and simmering tensions there have compounded Yemen’s troubles as it struggles with a resurgent al-Qaida and a six-year uprising by Shiite rebels in the north.
