Township sells seldom-used pedestrian span for $1
EGELSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An anonymous buyer has purchased a western Michigan pedestrian bridge for $1.
The catch: The buyer must pay to move the span from Egelston Township, about 35 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.
Egelston Township Supervisor Mike Thompson told The Muskegon Chronicle for a story published Sunday that he posted the bridge for sale for $1 on the Michigan Townships Association Web site because he was worried about the safety of the seldom-used, 39-year-old structure.
The buyer told Thompson the bridge is headed to a private residence in Alma, about 80 miles east. The buyer plans to use it to access an island in a private pond.
Students once used the bridge to get to an elementary school. The school no longer is used for elementary students.
