Genocide case opens against Bosnian Serb general
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A U.N. prosecutor has accused a top Bosnian Serb general of supervising the execution of thousands of Bosnian Muslims during the climax of the Bosnian war.
The prosecutor made the accusations at the opening of the genocide trial of Gen. Zdravko Tolimir, the last suspect in the custody of the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal to go on trial.
Prosecutor Nelson Thayer said the 61-year-old Tolimir was the senior intelligence officer and trusted aid of the Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, who is today a fugitive.
He said Tolimir assisted authorized and supervised the execution and burial of thousands of Muslims at Srebrenica and Zepa enclaves in 1995.
Tolimir is defending himself against eight counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
