Iran leader says opposition has lost credibility

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s supreme leader says the opposition has lost its credibility and right to participate in politics by not accepting the June presidential elections.

State TV on Thursday quoted Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying those not accepting the elections “would be disqualified from participatingin the Islamic system, and they have already lost their credibility.”

Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, says the postelection turmoil was because certain individuals wanted to “deny the vote of the people.”

The opposition says President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the June election through fraud.

Hundreds of thousands have protested in the streets over the ensuing seven months, causing the most serious crisis in decades.
