Nigeria: Local media reports president’s return
ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigerian media are reporting that ill President Umaru Yar’Adua has returned to the country but officials here are not confirming whether he’s back from a hospital in Saudi Arabia.
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan formally took over as acting president earlier this month, filling in for Yar’Adua who left Nigeria in November for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. The Nigerian government had ground to a halt as oil contracts went unsigned and sparking worry about the future of Africa’s most populous nation.
A chief aide to Yar’Adua was seen at a federal cabinet meeting Wednesday for the first time since the leader left the country, lending credence to the newspaper reports that he has quietly returned.
