Former AP reporter LeRoy Tillman Jr. dead at 54

WASHINGTON — LeRoy W. Tillman Jr., a former reporter for The Associated Press who covered the city of Washington for more than a decade, has died.

Tillman, 54, was found dead in his home Feb. 17. His brother says doctors believe he had a massive heart attack. A memorial service was held Tuesday.

Tillman worked for The Associated Press in Washington from 1986 to 1998. He worked for the metro desk and wrote stories about all facets of D.C. life, from homicide rates to the cherry blossom festival. A former colleague says Tillman was working the night in 1990 that then D.C.-mayor Marion Barry was arrested in an FBI sting for possession of cocaine. Tillman then covered the mayor through his re-election four years later.
