Miami Herald stops soliciting donations online

MIAMI — The Miami Herald has stopped soliciting donations on its Web site, a recent campaign to help keep the newspaper financially viable.

The Herald began the campaign in December, providing readers a link at the bottom of stories to a page accepting credit card information.

A short story in Saturday editions announced the program was scrapped. Executives would not say how much money was raised.

Newspapers across the country are searching for new streams of revenue to compensate for falling circulation and advertising sales.

Like other papers, The Herald has cut hundreds of employees to save costs.

Meanwhile, it continues to lose paying customers. In the past year alone, weekday print circulation has fallen 25 percent to about 163,000.
