BIRPUR - At least 12 people were injured when police opened fire to disperse a mob of agitating flood victims on Thursday in Bihar’s Birpur in Supaul District.
The victims were agitating to demand rehabilitation and compensation.
Speaking to ANI, Supaul District Magistrate Kumar Ravi said: Today there was a demonstration by some people and they turned violent they came and attacked the commissionary office.”
“We had called them for talks but nobody has come forth from their side for talks nor have they put forth any demand,” he added.
The flooding had occurred after the Kosi River burst a dam in neighbouring Nepal in 2008, and changed its course.
About 85 people had been killed and more than 2 million displaced by floodwaters that have smashed houses and destroyed 100,000 hectares of farmland. (ANI)
