Portland’s streetcar gets federal money
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland is to receive $23 million in federal stimulus money to improve streetcar service in the Southwest Waterfront area.
The money is part of $1.5 billion in transportation aid announced Wednesday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Portland’s project is among 51 nationwide that will share in the aid.
Portland plans to use the money to reconstruct SW Moody Avenue, including raising the roadway by 14 feet to cap contaminated soils. The finished street will include three traffic lanes, dual streetcar tracks and pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
